Mt. Redoubt erupts again

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

9:50 a.m. – Redoubt erupted again last night at 7:41.  Winds pushed the ash eastward.  There are no reports of ash from that eruption.  Seismicity has remained unchanged since early this morning.

Depending on where flights are coming from or going to at the Anchorage airport, expect delays or cancellations.

Ashfall around the Susitna Valley was scattered and localized.  Downtown Talkeetna doesn’t appear to have any ash, but walking along trails and along the river, there are intermittent areas of ash.  East Talkeetna appears to have no ash, but one Talkeetna air service reported light ash and the air service across the tarmack reported that there was so little it was indistigushable.  Ashfall in Trapper Creek was a little more significant although not measurable to any degree.  Residents along Petersville Road reported accumulation of ash.  Those along the Tokositna and at the end of Petersville Road reported between 1/8″ to 1/4″ of ash.  Skwenta appears to be the area that received the highest accumulation.

The DEC air advisory has expired.

Ashfall advisory cancelled

Monday, March 23, 2009

7:30 p.m.  The ashfall advisory for the Susitna Valley has been cancelled.  DEC’s air advisory is in effect until Tues. 10:00 AM.  Talkeetna has no ashfall, but Trapper Creek’s minimal ash might create breathing problems for those sensitive to air quality issues.  Residents, especially those on Petersville Road and in Skwentna that reported the most ashfall in the last 12 hours, should take the air quality advisory seriously.  Any one with asthma or breathing difficulty, young children and elderly, might have more difficulty in the outdoor environment.

Currently Redoubt has calmed down, but more activity should be expected.  The Alaska Volcano Observatory reminds people that the last time Redoubt erupted there was activity off and on for 4 months.

Currently winds are pushing any ashfall south and east.

No ashfall in Talkeetna

Monday, March 23, 2009

10:00 a.m. The results of the Mt Redoubt eruption are less than originally anticipated in the Upper Susitna area.  No ashfall to speak of has fallen in Talkeetna or Trapper Creek.  However, reports from the Tokositna area indicate the strong winds blowing very early this morning have created accumulated ashfall in that area.  Its not necessarily measurable, but remote cabin owners report that ash has covered the snow cover.

Ashfall started in Skwentna around 2:30 this morning.  A little Ash began falling in Talkeetna and Trapper Creek around 4:00 a.m.  Reports from Trapper Creek are a very light fine dusting.  Residents near the Forks Roadhouse on Petersville Road report about 1/8″ of ash.

The Parks Highway is in good condition.  No ashfall has been reported in Wasilla or Palmer.  Very little ash has fallen in Anchorage.

There are reports of some ash along the Tokositna and a dusting in Skwentna. Luce’s reports no ash and no ash along Lake Creek.

Mt Redoubt eruption morning update

Monday, March 23, 2009

6:00 a.m.  - We are still under an ashfall advisory until 8 a.m.  Some ash is in the air, but there isn’t even a dusting of ashfall currently in the Talkeetna area. Radar shows that winds seems to be blowing the ash further to the west. Schools are operating on their normal schedule.  There are no current road advisories.  Ash has not fallen in Anchorage, but flights into the Anchorage airport have been cancelled. Road conditions in Talkeetna are good, but still take caution.  See the Mat Su Borough website for a full list of precautions that can be taken during ashfall.

In the words of Pamyua, one of Alaska’s musical gems:

We call it Tribal Funk and World Music… And so will you!

It is our enchanting Inuit harmonies, the sound of the didgeridoo, and the thunderous roll of the African djembe that causes a rich explosion of cultures. The well-mixed sound reinterprets what cultural music is all about. We’re creating a sound that has it’s own culture  – it’s African – it’s Inuit. We have created a sound that will make you believe that there is an actual musical tradition for our mixed heritage. Enjoy!

Our concerts are presented in the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar, in downtown Talkeetna.
