Iditarod sign-up and rules change

Talkeetna musher Gerald Sousa joined 59 other mushers to sign up for the 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race. On Saturday, Iditarod mushers and volunteers met at the Wasilla Iditarod Trail Committee headquarters for the first day of sign up in next year’s race.

Two different sets of bears have been causing a disturbance in the Talkeetna area, getting into trash and showing no fear of humans.

Earthquake shakes Upper Valley

Earthquakes centered near the Skwentna area are continuing.  The Alaska Earthquake information Center located a minor quake this morning (fri) at 8:48 33 miles southwest of Talkeetna and 18 miles east of Skwentna.  The quake had a magnitude of 4.08 and was located at a depth of 29 miles.

The quake was felt as far away as Palmer and Anchorage. There were no reports of damage or injury.

The Earthquake center is calling it an aftershock to the large earthquakes on Monday.

Colberg sworn in as new mayor

Talis Colberg was officially sworn in as Mat Su Borough mayor last night (tues) at a special Borough Assembly meeting.

 

He was elected in a special election June 9th to replace mayor Curt Menard, who died of cancer in March. 

Colberg will need to run again this fall in the regular election if he wants to continue on as mayor when this special term ends.

The meeting was called to certify the election, discuss South Palmer Elementary, Borough office space issues and hold a joint assembly and planning commission meeting.
