Su Valley’s hockey game in Delta ends in vandalism and theft

by Sue Deyoe ~ November 16th, 2009

Su Valley’s hockey team traveled to Delta Junction this past weekend for two hockey games. They came back with two thousand dollars less in hockey equipment.

Alaska State Troopers responded to a call about a theft at the hockey rink in Delta on Saturday. The Delta team and Su Valley team met Saturday morning after Friday night’s game for a hearty pre-game breakfast. After the meal, both teams headed to the locker rooms to gear up and found that both lockers rooms had been vandalized and hockey equipment had been taken.

Coach Jack MacDonald says that over two thousand dollars worth of skates, gloves and other gear was stolen from the Su Valley team and that it looked like the thief might have been interrupted while trying to steal from the Delta team. A duffel bag of gear from the Delta team had been left in the Delta locker room.

He says the Su Valley team will cobble together the gear needed for this weekend’s game. Meanwhile, one of the hockey mom’s from Delta has contacted KTNA to report on a fundraising event scheduled for this Friday in Delta Junction. Trena Smith says they will be skating Friday afternoon and evening until twenty five hundred dollars is raised for Su Valley’s hockey team. The Delta School District will collect the money and send it to Su Valley.

Meanwhile, Coach MacDonald hopes for a warming trend in order to get the last layer of ice ready on the Talkeetna ice rink. He has thoughts of doing a fundraiser for the team here in Talkeetna, but says first things first. There is this weekend’s game to prepare for and an ice rink to complete. The Su Valley hockey team will travel to Glenallen on Friday for a two game series there.

** Delta’s hockey team starts their fundraiser for Su Valley at 4 pm Friday in Delta Junction and will skate until they reach the $2500 mark.  Delta School District will collect the funds and send them to the Su Valley hockey team.

This is terrible news that someone would do such a thing. It’s heart warming to see that everyone is coming together to raise the money to replace the equipment. Best of luck.
