Troopers suspend search for missing snowmachiner near Talkeetna

The Alaska State Troopers have suspended the search for 30-year-old Chuck Palmer.  Palmer went missing late Saturday near Talkeetna.  Troopers found his snowmachine on Sunday on a ridge above the Sheep River, but no trace of Palmer.

An aerial and ground search was initiated, but searchers fought inclement weather for the past 4 days.  Trooper spokesperson Beth Ipsen  said that the weather began to create safety concerns for those searching.

Over 2 feet of snow fell between Sunday and late Wednesday.  Palmer was reportedly not carrying survival gear, food or water, but friends said he was dressed for the weather.

Talkeetna Fire and Rescue, Wiliow Fire Department, Central Emergency Services, Alaska Wildlife troopers and State Troopers were all involved in the search.  The terrain they were searching was at the edge of tree line with sloping and rolling hills and some impassable ravines.

Ipsen says although the search is no longer on-going, the case will remain open.

Palmer lives with his three children and his mother and stepfather in Wasilla.
