The Susitna Valley Rams are back from weekend road trips

Susitna Valley’s varsity sports teams completed a busy weekend on Saturday. The hockey team traveled to Fairbanks to play Monroe Catholic twice, and the basketball teams traveled to Nikolaevsk for three games apiece.

Larry DeVilbiss is officially the new mayor of the Mat-Su Borough

Larry DeVilbiss officially became the new mayor for the Mat-Su Borough when he took the oath of office last Friday at the Assembly chambers in Palmer. In a special election held in early January, DeVilbiss managed to receive 3,964 votes. The runner-up candidate Brian Sullivan received 2,616 votes. (more…)

Willow musher, Justin Savidis wins Don Bowers Memorial sled dog race

The Don Bowers Memorial sled dog race took place last weekend with eleven mushers from Willow, Talkeetna, Wasilla, Anchorage and even Washington state leaving the start line on Friday.  Willow musher Justin Savidis won the race with 15 dogs in harness in a time of 20 hours and twenty-two minutes. Lonnie Dupre retreats to basecamp

For the better part of January, mountaineering aficionados kept an eye on the progress of Minnesota climber Lonnie Dupre who tried to summit Mount McKinley solo and set out to do so on January 7. But Mother Nature in form of 100 mph winds forced Dupre’s retreat and he decided today  to retreat to basecamp. Diana Haecker spoke with Dupre and has this report.

Locals concerned about proposed military training area expansion

The military held an open house on Tuesday night at the Swiss Alaska Inn in Talkeetna to present information about planned expansions of Air Force, Army and Navy training areas. Trisha Costello was there and gathered local reactions to the proposals that would mostly affect the airspace east and north of Talkeetna.
