Natural Observations-CA travels

On this locally produced Earth and Beyond program, the conclusion of Robin Song’s travels Outside early this spring. She visits the racehorse Seabiscuit’s historic home, and other places she frequented many years ago, stopping, as usual, for birding and photography, and to meet up with old friends. Willow fire contained but wildfire danger elsewhere still high

On Sunday evening, a wildfire at milepost 74 of the George Parks Highway was reported to the division of forestry.  Two helicopters, a tanker plane, lead plane, three Mat Su area engines as well as a Gannett Glacier crew, and several Borough fire engines responded to the fire.  The fire produced a lot of smoke and the Parks Highway was closed for about two hours while crews fought the fire. Memorial Day weekend keeps Troopers busy

It was a busy Memorial Day weekend for troopers.  At least two deaths by drowning occurred statewide over the holiday weekend.

Earthquake jostles Talkeetna

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located an earthquake early this morning just after midnight at 12:24.  The quake was 24 miles north-northeast of Talkeetna and 59 miles southwest of Cantwell.  It was measured at a magnitude of 3.79 and a depth of 45 miles.

No reports of damage have been received.

Environmental groups appeal DEC herbicide permit decision

Environmental groups are appealing a decision by the courts dealing with Alaska Railroads’ permit through Department of Conservation to spray herbicides on sections of track south of Anchorage.

In 2006, after the Alaska Railroad applied for a permit to spray herbicides along the railroad and public outcry ensued, the Department of Environmental Conservation denied the permit.  In 2008, the Railroad authorized a study on small sections of track and then reapplied to DEC for a permit.

Climbers in fall on Denali identified

The names of the climbers in the fatal fall on Denali late Wednesday night have been released.

The four person team that fell from Denali Pass were led by Alpine Ascents International.  Their lead guide, 34 year old Suzanne Allen and client Peter Bullard, age 45, of China (an English national), died in the fall. (more…)
