Mat Su Borough starts mapping with LiDAR

The Mat Su Borough is part of a multi agency project that will add accuracy to mapping throughout the Borough. The Borough Assembly adopted final legislation this spring that accepts appropriations from various agencies on acquistion of LiDar mapping.

Memorial Day events in Talkeetna

Memorial Day weekend in the Upper Valley is considered one of the busiest weekends of the year.  This year, many activities are planned, most are unrelated to each other, but all are expected to bring in extra people and traffic. Friday. May 27th marks the start of a 3-day two-pitch softball tournament in downtown Talkeetna.  It is the annual Miners Day softball tourney that used to be part of an annual Chamber of Commerce event.  About 10 teams participate. The tournament starts Friday, lasts all day Saturday and Sunday and ends Sunday evening. (more…)

Two more climbers die on Denali Wednesday night

A fatal fall high on Denali took the lives of two climbers late Wednesday night and severely injured two others. These are the third and fourth deaths on the mountain this year, with seven deaths overall in the Alaska Range this climbing season. Reporter Sue Deyoe has more on the most recent accident.

First year of Project Earth a success at Talkeetna Elementary

Over 30 years ago, a concept called Project Ocean began.  Talkeetna elementary students had the chance to travel for nine hours and experience the sea and learn science in the study of the ocean.  This year, the 5th and 6th grade classes got to experience Project Earth for the first time.  Sue Deyoe spoke with the students and the teacher about their trip.

The state of Alaska is jumping on board National Trails Day.  Since 1993, the first weekend in June is known as National Trails Day.  Events usually include hikes, new trail dedications, educational events, and trail maintenance. (more…)

Two overdue climbers on Mount Frances in the Alaska Range are confirmed dead.

Denali National Park mountaineering rangers located the remains of 33 year old Jiro Kurihara  of Canada and Junya Shiraishi, age 28, of Japan in avalanche debris on Mt. Frances, a technical peak just north of the Kahiltna basecamp on Denali. (more…)
