Governor cuts $412 million out of state budget

Governor Parnell has met his goal of cutting over $400 million out of the state’s capital budget.  He introduced his final budget cuts today (wed).

Fourth of July events for Talkeetna residents

Independence Day events are gearing up for the holiday weekend in Talkeetna.

This year, as was the case last year, a few events from the former Moose Dropping Festival will be held on Fourth of July.

The Moose on Parade participants and everyone else involved with the Fourth of July parade will meet at the old Christian Center parking lot to organize.  The parade, as always, starts at high noon. (more…)

National Weather Service asks for comments on weather stations

The National Weather Service has opened a public comment period concerning the proposed closure AND proposed automation of certain weather stations across Alaska.

A few of the mission critical stations that have been recommended to be replaced with automated sensors for around-the-clock coverage are Skwentna, McCarthy and Chulitna. (more…)

Denali’s basecamp sees extreme melt

The Denali climbing season is starting to wrap up.  There are only a couple hundred people left on the mountain and only a few left to check in at the Talkeetna Ranger station to start their climbs. With less than 2 weeks left in the regular climbing season the Kahiltna Glacier has yawning crevasses and climbers are being forced to only travel at night. Basecamp usually sees signs of melt at this time of year, but this year is just a bit more extreme.  Sue Deyoe has the report on basecamp conditions…

Wounded Warriors head up Denali

A team of Iraq war veterans, as part of a Wounded Warrior program, landed at Kahiltna basecamp on Friday and are headed up Denali.  The team consists of  Dave Olson, Dave’s 18 year old son Evan,  Justin Legg, Will Wilson, Vic Thibeault, Gerard Coleman, Randy Rozin and Jon Cummings.  Legg is a double lung transplant patient who will undergo pulmonary checks on the way up the mountain to see how his lungs fare at high altitude.
