Alaska’s DOT&PF annual report now available

The Alaska DOT has released their annual report for 2010.  The 32 page document is available on line for any resident to read at their leisure.

The report highlights all facets of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities across the state including driving accidents, construction, airport facilities, and population growth projections.

Residents have another week for Pick Click Give

Alaskans who filed for the 2011 Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) have a few more days to make Pick-Click-Give charitable contributions. The PFD Division homepage will accept new contributions to over 400 nonprofit causes through August 31. (more…)

AEA to study tidal power

The Alaska Energy Authority and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration  recently signed a memorandum of agreement to conduct an assessment of tidal hydrokinetic energy in Cook Inlet.

NOAA will measure and model water levels and the current, salinity and temperature within Cook Inlet waters to identify regions that could promise generation of tidal energy. (more…)

Randoneurs finish Big Wild Ride

The Alaska Randonneurs’  Big Wild Ride bicyclists rode from Valdez to Fairbanks to Talkeetna and Anchorage and all finished by noon Thursday.

The first three riders were into Talkeetna before noon on Wednesday.  A total of 31 riders showed up for the event, with nine not finishing the event. (more…)

Troopers find that bone found in Talkeetna was not human

Last week, an individual that had been fishing in the Talkeetna area turned in a bone his dog had found along the river to  Fairbanks area Troopers.  He believed the bone to be a human femur. The bone was turned over to the state medical examiners office.  That office studied the bone to determine the type and if identification was necessary.

The state medical examiner contacted Troopers and concluded that the bone was not a bone from a human.  The investigation into the matter is closed.

Susitna Matanuska Area Plan Adopted

The adopted plan is now available.  It establishes land use designations and management guidelines for the area north of Wasilla and south of Trapper Creek.  DNR recently held a public meeting to discuss the plan and answer questions about the changes made since the draft plan.

The Susitna Matanuska Area Plan had not seen a revision since the1985 Susitna Area Plan was adopted..  Last spring,  a draft revised plan went through public comment.  Dozens of comments were received and DNR officials made some slight revisions to the plan in light of those comments. (more…)

DILLINGHAM – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is dedicating over $3.4 million to support fish habitat projects in 38  states, including Alaska.

Over $500,000 dollars in federal funding is going to the 16-projects in Alaska, which will also include over $1.4-million in matching funds from the local partners in the projects.    (more…)
