By Laura Wright–Another kind of harvesting is going on this autumn besides potatoes and it’s a banner crop. Rock harvesting is booming on some area roads right now. Bills Stearns, who holds the contracts to maintain upper valley roads, says we have no shortage of rocks on the gravel roads up here.

Stearns, owner of D&S Road Services, is using an “In-Place Rock Crusher,” the first in Alaska, on select roads. (more…)

By Sondra Porter–The warm, cooperative fall weather has been a blessing to trail builders, who are working on new sections of the Talkeetna Lakes Park Trail.  This week, they are hoping the weather holds as they continue to blaze a new 5K track.

Howard Carbone, chairman of the Talkeetna Parks Advisory Committee, is excited about the project. “ This is a major project,” he said.  “And it is being done right so the trail won’t require much maintenance in the future.” (more…)

By Sondra Porter–Sunshine Station Childcare Center has just received a helping hand from the Talkeetna Bachelor Society.  This past Sunday, five bachelors teamed with other volunteers, parents and board members to put up fencing around the new playground at the station.  This nearly brings to a close a series of workdays in Phase One of the playground upgrade. Brandon Latham at D.C. press conference

Local Talkeetna resident and Denali mountaineering ranger Brandon Latham is putting his climbing and technical rope rescue expertise to good use in Washington, DC this week. Latham is currently on a two-week detail assignment overseeing the safety of the rappelling operations involved in the repairs to the Washington Monument following the magnitude 5.8 earthquake that rocked the East Coast on August 23.   (more…)

By Sondra Porter–In Trapper Creek, fall harvest can be the social event of the season. On Saturday around 30 people—volunteers, residents and non-residents ranging in age from 8 to nearly 80, met at Red Cooney’s farm to harvest his two acres of potatoes.

The potato harvest at Cooney’s has become an annual event. Cooney’s crop boosted a fair variety of potatoes including German butter, Green Mountain, and Yukon Gold, but the largest yield came from his Red Eye potatoes. This year’s total harvest was an especially good one, yielding an estimated 25 thousand pounds. (more…)
