Iditarod deadline is Wednesday

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

The deadline for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race looms, and so far the race has 62 teams signed up. Entries for the race are due by close of business Wednesday, and race administrator Jo-Ann Potts expects they will still see a few more entries come in between now and then. Entries that are mailed in have to be postmarked by midnight tonight, but Potts says she hopes any entries getting mailed the day of the deadline would give a call to let them know.

Denali reservations jump on opening day

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Five days after Black Friday’s much-hyped post-thanksgiving sales, a new midnight opening approaches. However, this opening is less likely to pose the same personal safety concerns as a consumer hullabaloo. It’s more like making sure you get your tickets to Phish the day they go on sale.

Reservations for Transportation and Camping in Denali National Park opened at midnight. Park Concession management specialist Jim LeBel says that while it may not be a door-busting, blowout sale, the first day of December is still the highest volume day for reservations until much later in the season. Up the creek without a permit

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

A man who left his four-by-four in a creek after getting it stuck during an attempted crossing received a criminal misdemeanor summons for not having a permit to cross a stream used by spawning salmon.

Alaska Wildlife troopers responded to call of a Chevy Blazer that was submerged in Deception Creek near Willow. The vehicles owner had attempted to cross the creek, but he neglected to first obtain a permit from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to use tracked or wheeled vehicles to cross a body of water classified as anadromous.

Talking about chimney fires

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

The fire department responded to a chimney fire in Downtown Talkeetna Last night, but the homeowner had been able to smother the flames using a fire extinguisher by the time help arrived. Thermal imaging cameras showed the walls and stovepipe were cool, and there was no damage to the structure.

Fire Chief Ken Farina says that chimney fires are not the most common cause of house fires in District 4, and that infernos are just as apt to be ignited by electrical fires or carelessness. The risks of chimney fires can be reduced by burning dry, seasoned wood and keeping chimneys clean with regular brushing. Should you find yourself facing a chimney fire, Farina says steam can sometimes extinguish flames.

The Fire Department is always looking for people willing to become involved in Emergency Services. The on-call jobs offer free training, and responders are paid for their time while responding to an emergency. Anyone looking to get involved can call the fire station at 733-2443.
