A message from the local fire chief: The Upper Susitna Valley is in its prime time for wildland fires. Please be very careful when burning anything in or around your yard. Remember you need to have a burn permit. Burn permits are available outside on the Smokey Bear board at each fire station. Please do not leave fire unattended and have water near-by.

The U.S. Army and Air Force have prepared the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Modernization and Enhancement of Ranges, Airspace, and Training Areas in the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex, (JPARC) which includes some 25,0000 square miles  of land for training in the Talkeetna, Lake Louise, Paxson, and Cantwell areas. Area residents, pilots, and those who use this area for hunting and recreation are encouraged to attend an open house and formal public hearing and testimony on the proposals and  Draft EIS.  A meeting will be held locally at the Swiss Alaska Inn on Tuesday May 22nd. The meeting begins at 5 pm in an open house format.  At 5:45, there will be a presentation on proposals, the NEPA process and environmental impacts. This will be followed by a formal public hearing and public testimony. Written comment will be taken until June 7th. Alaska Legal Services will be at the Sunshine Community Health Center on Wednesday May 23rd, between 12:00 and 3.30 pm. Alaska Legal Services is a private, non-profit law firm providing free, civil, legal services to seniors and low income Alaskans. They do not handle criminal cases. Services range from legal advice and assistance to full representation in court. All applicants must be screened to meet income eligibility criteria. You may call the Sunshine Community Health Center at 733-2273 to make an appointment.

thru Tues midday–Mat Su Central School principal John Brown and counselor Laura Porter will be at Su Valley School 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, to discuss the Mat Su Borough School District home school program along with opportunities for high school students to earn credit this summer.  The CEAL Academy, one of Northern Susitna Institute’s programs, has collaborated with a team of area residents, Mat-Su Central School, trades people, non-profits and business owners to create a comprehensive program of job shadow, internship and service learning opportunities. This program is designed to engage students in real life experiences and help them understand the issues and challenges of different careers before high school graduation.   Open to all public, private and home school students, this program is most appropriate for students in the northern Susitna Valley. The Talkeetna Historical Society is roping off the museum parking lot in preparation for maintenance, clean-up and grading. The date for complete closure needed to do grading will be posted.

(Start Monday) Jessica’s Rose Event:  Come celebrate the life and work of Jessica Stevens during the  Jessica’s Rose event being held  on Saturday May26th. Keep a look out for friends and visitors wearing beautiful yellow roses.
Roses will be available at the following locations: the Village Park, The Flying Squirrel Bakery, Moore’s Mercantile and the Post Office in Trapper Creek.

The Nordic Ski Trails in Talkeetna Lakes Park are closed for the 2012 summer season.  Trail closure is due to freshly planted grass seed, so trails are not to be used until the grass has grown in. Your cooperation as trail users is essential for the trails to be opened for summer use.   Trails will be reopened for the winter ski season. Call 733-7923 with any questions or concerns.

The Bear Necessities Coalition encourages residents and guests to be bear aware. It’s time to clean up bird feeders until next fall, reducing any tempting opportunities for black or brown bears to learn about eating birdseed. Keep bears wild and people safe in your neighborhood!

Burn permits are required for open burning from April 1st through August 31st.  Burning in a barrel which meets specifications is allowed, otherwise, you need a burn permit for burning in the barrel. You can apply online for a burn permit from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, or by calling 761-6312. Anyone starting a fire is responsible for that fire until it is completely out. The Bird Migratory Act suggests to avoid land clearing or tree cutting until July 15 to avoid cutting bird nests down.  The Upper Susitna Soil and Water Conservation District asks you to please consider this when planning to cut trees.

(Friday only) Extreme fire conditions: Today is a red flag day from 12:00 until 2400 hours. Conditions are extreme for the valley. Only warming fires and burn barrels with screens are permitted all other burning is not allowed. Remember one small mistake with fire can change our world as we know it. Please be fire wise.   • People who are trained to host news, and can fill in occasionally. Also,  another morning news host (or two)! We’re also looking for a regular volunteer for the Friday evening news starting in mid-June.
  • Contributors to the Earth and Beyond program. If you’d like to write short pieces about natural history or Earth science subjects from a northern Susitna Valley perspective, give us a call! Staff can do the technical part, we’re seeking writers and their voices!

* To send an echo, or to cancel an echo you’ve received, send an e-mail from our web site, ktna.org or call 733-1200.
* If leaving an echo on voicemail, please speak slowly and clearly. If there is a name, word or phrase which is very important or easily misunderstood, you should spell it.
* Echoes are aired for two days, unless you leave other instructions.
* On weekdays, echoes are aired three times: after morning news, at about 7:45, and following midday classifieds at about 12:20 and evening classifieds at about 6:20.
* On Sundays, you can hear echoes twice, at 12:25 in the afternoon and 6:25 in the evening. There are no echoes on Saturday.
