A  live 15-minute conversation about health and wellness

from the Sunshine Community Health Center:

It’s hosted by Holly Stinson, with in-studio guest Keith Kehoe,

Physician Assistant at the clinic.

In today’s program, Keith and Holly talk about this year’s flu vaccine, the recent outbreak of the viral hand, foot, and mouth disease in local youth…(and adults). He tells how to identify this self-limiting virus on your body, and potential complications, as well as how to deal with it.

From there, he talks about how it’s difficult to tell whether an illness is caused by bacteria (and therefore treated with an antibiotic), or a virus (and therefore letting our immune system take care of it), and who might want to see a health provider rather than trying to make the determination themselves.

A  live 15-minute conversation about health and health news

from the Sunshine Community Health Center:

It’s hosted by Holly Stinson, with in-studio guest Keith Kehoe,

Physician Assistant at the clinic.

On this program, Keith tells about the sometimes mysterious pattern of peoples’ reasons for visiting the clinic, reminds listeners that a change of seasons means differing levels or types of stress, and how one might deal with that. An approach to suspected giardiasis is discussed, and, after a couple weeks of rain, wild mushrooms are a topic. Also, a quick heads-up about the Clinic’s Color Run coming up August 31st.

On this program, Keith talks about the relationship between chicken pox and shingles, how to identify an outbreak of shingles, and why he recommends a shingles vaccine for people in their sixties.

Keith also wants people to know about a free four-day camp for young people 15 to 21 who might be interested in careers in behavioral health, a field which has too few providers in Alaska.  The camp starts August 1st in Anchorage.

A  live 15-minute conversation about health and health news from the Sunshine Community Health Center: It’s hosted by Holly Stinson, with in-studio guest Keith Kehoe, Physician Assistant at the clinic.

Today’s tips are on the subject of heat (and how it’s all relative, and individual), insect bites, the continued cases of influenza, and how to minimize the biggest risk travelers face in any place they visit. (Hint:  The biggest risk to travelers’ health is not a disease or intestinal problem).

A  live 15-minute conversation about health and health news from the Sunshine Community Health Center: It’s hosted by Holly Stinson, with in-studio guest Keith Kehoe, Physician Assistant at the clinic.

In this program, Keith talks about seasonal health issues such as insect bites, eye injuries, ankle injuries, ATV accidents, burns, diving accidents: Prevention, and first aid…what to do before you go to the clinic or emergency room. He also talked briefly about the Mat-Su Health Foundation’s healthy community assessment, and one of the outcomes: communities can be more healthy if there’s a place for community members to gather, such as a health center which might have a pool and teen center.

A  live 15-minute conversation about health and health news from the Sunshine Community Health Center: It’s hosted by Holly Stinson, with in-studio guest Keith Kehoe, Physician Assistant at the clinic.
Today’s main topic of conversation was about the focus of the Northwest Regional Primary Care Conference which Keith attended recently:  How do we keep people well?  The current thinking in primary care is that population health, with a holistic approach to well-being, is what should be emphasized. Keeping the population emotionally and physically well should take aspects of food quality and security, transportation, and the work place into consideration. Also, a growing concern among attendees at the conference is opioid addiction and the health risks and dangers of e-cigarettes.
Finally, Keith reminded listeners to be aware of the stress of the season, and to take time out to take care of themselves.  (A woodpecker on the outside of the building added emphasis to most of today’s conversation).
