Search personnel are continuing the effort today.  Last night, a Healy-Tri-Valley SAR group was added to the search effort, bumping the number of searchers up to more than 35.    The Healy Fire Department confirmed that searchers from the Denali Emergency Rescue Team (DERT) **have gotten involved with the effort.  Alaska Wildlife Troopers joined the search with Helo Two, a Cessna 185 and a Super Cub.  In addition, the Civil Air Patrol flew a number of hours.  As of 5 pm Tuesday, approximately 44 hours of flight time had been logged in the search.

The canine units were only able to pick up scent in the direct vicinity of where the truck was found.

Many dog mushers have confirmed that it is useless to try and use sled dogs for the purpose of searching, since they are not trained in that capacity.  The dogs being used are from PAWS, MAT-SAR K9s and ASARD.

Troopers say that each day consists of about twelve to thirteen hours of searching.

One new technique arrived on the scene last night. The department of King Air arrived and flew overland using Forward Looking Infrared.

**DERT is a group of trained search and rescue volunteers living in Healy and near Denali Park. They are a community emergency response team that periodically has fundraisers to provide more training/resources for their volunteers.

The volunteers come under the overall umbrella of ASARA

The 39th Iditarod came to a close Sunday evening with the Iditarod banquet.  Both Talkeetna mushers came into Nome over the weekend, in 38th and 46th place respectively.

John Baker is the winner of the 39th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and is the first Inupiaq since 1976 to win the race.  His team raced under the burled arches in Nome at 9:46 this morning. Baker has set the record for the fastest time to Nome in 8 days 19 hours and 46 minutes..  Sue Deyoe spoke with reporter Diana Haecker, who was at the finish line:

Tuesday marked the deadline to sign up for the thirty-ninth Iditarod.The field includes four-time winner and current champion Lance Mackey as well as his stepson Cain Carter.

The top echelon of mushers signed up include former champions Rick Swenson, Mitch Seavey and Martin Buser and regular top ten mushers like Sebastian Schnuelle, Hans Gatt, Hugh Neff, John Baker and Paul Gebhard. Missing from the list is four-time winner Jeff King.

A large contingent of mushers from the Willow area are taking to the trail to Nome again. They are Dallas Seavey, Kelley Griffin, Matt Hayashida, DeeDee Jonrowe and brothers Cim and Ramey Smyth.

Also signed up are teams from Scotland, Jamaica, Canada and Norway.

The officer found that Chilcoat had a gunshot wound to his head. According to a trooper news release, it was determined that he shot himself while family members were outside the residence.

Dr Chilcoat was a practicing veterinarian in Talkeetna, and also served as a volunteer veterinarian in the Iditarod Trail sled dog race.  He was well known by dog and other pet owners in the Upper Susitna Valley.

–Trooper spokesperson Megan Peters says they are treating the case as a suicide investigation.  An autopsy will be performed and no information will be available until the state medical examiner is finished with the case.

And, even more interesting, the second place Iditarod finisher, Hans Gatt, won the Yukon Quest this year.  And Lance Mackey was this year’s second place finisher in the Yukon Quest.  Last year and the year previous, Mackey was the winner of both the Quest and the Iditarod. Gatt crossed under the burled arch about an hour after Mackey.

Several mushers, including Gatt and Mackey, have questioned their future and have publicly stated that this might be their last Iditarod.

Mackey was swarmed with fans lining the streets of Nome.  Even though he now has four wins under his belt, he is still considered an underdog among many people.

Talkeetna musher Gerald Sousa joined 59 other mushers to sign up for the 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race. On Saturday, Iditarod mushers and volunteers met at the Wasilla Iditarod Trail Committee headquarters for the first day of sign up in next year’s race.

In all, 60 mushers hailing from Alaska, the lower 48, Canada, Scotland and even Jamaica handed in their sign-up paperwork and the newly increased entry fee of $4,000. Citing increased costs to put on the race, the ITC has increased the entry fee from $1,875 in 2007 to $3,000 in 2008 and $4,000 for the 2009 and 2010 races.

Four time Iditarod champions Jeff King and Martin Buser, three time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey and 2004 champion Mitch Seavey entered the race as well as 19 rookies.

The purse is set at $630,000, with $610,000 paid out to the top 30 finishers, and $1,049 apiece for the rest of the pack.

Mushers attending the picnic get to participate in a lottery that waives the entry fee. This year’s two winners were Denali musher Jeff King and Kotzebue musher Robert Nelson.

A new rule sees that mushers get to draw for their starting position in the order of their sign up either in person or via mail. Sousa’s drawing position is 38, meaning that he is the 38th person to draw for starting position.

Another new rule to become effective in 2012 is that rookies have to log at least 750 miles in pre-qualifying races, which is up from 500 miles.

The ITC is also finalizing a new rule that enforces drug testing of mushers.

The next Iditarod starts March 7 with a ceremonial start in Anchorage and a restart in Willow the following day.

The 37th Iditarod official ended at 4:06 Tuesday morning when Michigan rookie musher Timothy Hunt crossed the finish line in Nome.

Talkeetna musher, Heather Siirtola was ahead of him about 2 and a half hours.  She came under the burled arches at 1:35 a.m. in 51st place.

The race, which started with 67 mushers, ended with 52 crossing the finish line.   15 mushers either scratched or were withdrawn from this year’s race.  A total of 6 dogs died in this year’s Iditarod.  The latest dog death occurred on a flight from Shaktoolik to Nome.  Alan Peck had scratched and had been picked up to fly back to Nome.  The plane went thru what was described as violent turbulence.  There is no cause of death yet for his dog.  A necropsy is being performed.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have asked Alaska State Troopers to open a criminal investigation into the dog deaths in this year’s race. However, it doesn’t appear that the cruelty-to-animals- law applies to dog mushing races
