Susitna Valley’s varsity sports teams completed a busy weekend on Saturday. The hockey team traveled to Fairbanks to play Monroe Catholic twice, and the basketball teams traveled to Nikolaevsk for three games apiece.

The Don Bowers Memorial sled dog race took place last weekend with eleven mushers from Willow, Talkeetna, Wasilla, Anchorage and even Washington state leaving the start line on Friday. Willow musher Justin Savidis won the race with 15 dogs in harness in a time of 20 hours and twenty-two minutes. (more…)

Willow speed musher Egil Ellis sprinted away with the champion title when he won the open class in last weekend’s Su Valley Championship sled dog races. (more…)
Tonight, Talkeetna hockey fans will have the last chance to see the Susitna Valley Rams hockey team play on their home ice as the 2011 hockey season winds down. Most of the hockey team will be graduating this coming spring.
Coach Jack MacDonald said that the majority of his players, including his goalie, are seniors and that after their graduation, there will only be four players left. That’s not enough for a competitive varsity team.
MacDonald said there is a big generation gap between his current team and upcoming players who are not even in high school yet.
He said he’s sad to see this era come to an end as he has coached the players on the varsity team for eight years. After this season, (more…)
Talkeetna ice hockey coach Jack Macdonald was in for a pleasant surprise at last Friday’s first home game when it was announced that the ice rink is going to be named after him and called the “Jack P. MacDonald ice arena.”MacDonald said that he is still overwhelmed and deeply honored by the dedication. (more…)
