Talkeetna and Trapper Creek Elementary see changes in staff

The school year begins next week.  There have been a few changes in teaching positions as both Talkeetna and Trapper Creek Elementary lose teachers.

Nelson trial delayed

The trial of Jeremy Christopher Nelson, of Trapper Creek, has been delayed until the end of October.  The trial was set for August 1st but has been continued.

Nelson is accused of killing Trapper Creek resident Robert Carey and then shooting and severely injuring Carey’s wife Verna in January of 2010.He currently faces a Murder 1 charge, attempted murder and an assault charge.  He entered a not-guilty plea after his arrest.  He is incarcerated at Mat Su pretrial on a $750,000 cash bond and third party custodian requirement.  The trial is currently set for October 28th in Judge Greg Heath’s courtroom in Palmer.

Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival celebrates its last after years of Borough struggle

For hardcore music festival fans across Alaska, this weekend will be bittersweet.  It is the last Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival….ever.  That’s a promise made by organizers. Organziers complain that it’s the policies of the Mat Su Borough that have finally shut down the festival for good.  Sue Deyoe has more on the end of the largest  summer music festival in Alaska.  (note – the story says the festival is on private land NORTH of Talkeetna – its actually south of Trapper Creek AND Talkeetna, but north of the Talkeetna “Y”)

Court order requires Trapper Creek festival to follow Borough regulations

An Alaska Superior Court judge on Thursday ordered the promoter of the Trapper Creek Bluegrass festivals to follow Mat Su Borough regulations on outdoor gatherings.

The Borough Attorney says the action came about because of citizen complaints.  Complaints on the two separate festivals started in 2006. (more…)

Explosion in Trapper Creek

The sound of a big explosion ripped through the night on Friday and could be heard as far as Talkeetna when 550 pounds of dynamite detonated in Trapper Creek. A Trapper Creek man had the dynamite stored in an old abandoned station wagon on his property. He had called the Alaska Wildlife Trooper on Friday and showed him the wagon containing 550 pounds of ammonium nitrate that had been stored there since the mid-90s. (more…)

Susitna Council votes to send opinion to Redistricting Board

The Susitna Council voted to send a message to the Alaska Redistricing Board – asking for a fair share.  The letter will actually say the Mat Su area should get what the council says should be 5 1/2 House seats instead of the plan the Redistristing Board proposes,  which is 3 seats and 2 shared seats. Trapper Creek Elementary slated for roof repairs

The Mat Su Borough approved roof repairs for the Trapper Creek elementary school last year and they asked the state for funds.  By June of 2010, the Borough received word that the project had survived the Governor’s veto pen. $110,000 was allocated to the repair project. (more…)
