Gold offered for Moose waste arrest

An ounce of gold and $500 are being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the wanton waste of a moose near Ferry, a remote community near Healy, in early September 2011. According to an Alaska State Troopers Press Release, the moose was killed in Game Management Unit 20A in the first week of September and left approximately six miles up the Ferry trail on the northwest side of the trail in a burned forest area. The 45-inch bull moose had two brow tines on one side and three on the other, which is legal for hunters in the area carrying an any bull hunting tag, but not legal for a normal harvest moose ticket. The dead moose was discovered by a hunter, who then reported it to Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Cantwell. The $500 reward is through the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Safeguard hotline. A local miner pitched in the ounce of gold as an added incentive to find the culprit.

Body of missing Wasilla man found near Petersville

The body of 47 year old John Gamble of Wasilla was located yesterday (thurs) in the Petersville area. The body was recovered late yesterday by search teams that had been looking for him for the last several days.

Gamble has been missing since early July. His friends last saw him July 2^nd when they left him at a mining camp near Cache Creek. Eleven days passed before Gamble was reported missing. He was expected to return to work on July 18^th.

His truck was found stuck on a trail near Dollar Creek almost a week ago. Gamble’s personal items that would have normally been carried with him were in the truck.

His body was located approximately one and a half miles away from the vehicle. Troopers report no signs of trauma or foul play. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death

State troopers, Alaska state park rangers, Helo One and many others were involved in the ground and air search to find Gamble.

Explosion in Trapper Creek

The sound of a big explosion ripped through the night on Friday and could be heard as far as Talkeetna when 550 pounds of dynamite detonated in Trapper Creek. A Trapper Creek man had the dynamite stored in an old abandoned station wagon on his property. He had called the Alaska Wildlife Trooper on Friday and showed him the wagon containing 550 pounds of ammonium nitrate that had been stored there since the mid-90s. The trooper called the Elmendorf explosive ordinance disposal unit. When the specialists arrived at the scene on mile 3.5 of Petersville Road, they deemed the dynamite unstable and evacuated about 50 homes in a 6,600-foot radius. Troopers, Mat-Su Emergency Services including the Talkeetna Fire Department, the American Red Cross and the Division of Forestry responded and helped with the evacuation. The evacuees were taken to the Trapper Creek Elementary School. At 2 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Elmendorf explosive specialists blew up the station wagon with the dynamite. Two windows in a nearby home blew out, but no other damage was reported. Trooper spokesperson Beth Ipsen said that they are withholding the dynamite owner’s identity and that the case is sill under investigation. So far, no charges have been pressed.

Trapper Creek Elementary slated for roof repairs

The Mat Su Borough approved roof repairs for the Trapper Creek elementary school last year and they asked the state for funds. By June of 2010, the Borough received word that the project had survived the Governor’s veto pen. $110,000 was allocated to the repair project.

The project manager for the Trapper Creek repair is Jeff Walden and last fall, he had said he expected the money to be available in October. As with many projects, there are slight delays at times.

Now, Acting Borough manager, Elizabeth Gray, has announced that Triple 5 Construction from Big Lake has been selected as the contractor and they are scheduled to begin work on the roof in June after school is out. The work is scheduled for completion before the end of summer break.

There is not enough money for the school roof to be replaced entirely, but a proper transition between the roof and the flat roof extension will be installed.

At the same time those repairs are happening, manager Gray reports that a number of road repairs have been scheduled for the Trapper Creek area including the Mile 121 parking lot, Kula Road and Oilwell Extension as well as Trail Ridge and the completion of Moose Creek Bridge.

Troopers rescue backcountry camper

Troopers rescued Timothy Troyer, 52 of Spokane, WA from the north fork of the Kashwitna River Wednesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, an emergency beacon activation was reported to Wasilla MASCOM. Troopers launched Helo One, but due to poor weather, they couldn’t reach the area. A search was resumed Wednesday and the helicopter was able to retrieve Troyer. He was flown to Mat Su Regional with an unspecified medical problem.

According to the Troopers, Troyer was flown into the Kashwitna area on July 17 and was due to be picked up August 10^th

Troopers look for Ferry man

Alaska State Troopers are looking for 54 year old Foster Carr of Ferry, Alaska for a case involving using a weapon while intoxicated. An investigation from April 10^th showed that Carr was highly intoxicated and armed himself with a rifle and shot in the direction of two people. Troopers have issued a summons for Carr for the crimes of reckless endangerment and misconduct involving weapons.

Troopers ask that anyone knowing the whereabouts of Carr to contact the Fairbanks Troopers.

Butts, Martin and Wilson sentenced

The individuals accused in the case surrounding a Talkeetna robbery and many area burglaries in 2007 were sentenced last week. The case has had numerous delays due to its complexity and amount of evidence.
