The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has shut down all salmon fishing on Larson Creek.

According to a statement by Fish and Game on Monday, about half of the sockeye salmon run for the year has passed the counting weir by the beginning of August. This year, that amounted to just over 1,700 fish. The sustainable escapement goal for sockeye on Larson Creek starts at 15,000 fish.

The new order takes effect Wednesday morning. It means no salmon species can be targeted or retained on Larson Creek nor within a mile of its confluence with the Talkeetna River. Sport fishing for non-salmon species is still allowed on the creek, but any salmon caught accidentally must be immediately released.
