State grant funding for the crosswalk at the Talkeetna Library will not be enough to complete the project.

Earlier this summer, the State awarded the Talkeetna Community Council $70,000 for the crosswalk across the Spur Road to the Library. It is likely less than half of the funding needed to construct the project.

Alaska State Representative Kevin McCabe nominated the project for the funding after hearing community concerns at a Council meeting. The funding was a surprise to the Council since no formal budget or project outline was created.

Though it ultimately needs State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities approval, Borough staff stepped in to help. Borough Environmental Engineer Mike Campfield says they have completed some preliminary survey and design work. Campfield estimates that the project will cost about $200,000 to complete, including final design work, permits, and construction.

Borough Community Development Director Jillian Morrissey says the Borough does not currently have the funding to make up the difference in this year’s budget. However, the grant term is five years, giving the Council time to find other funding sources.
