The M-V Susitna Ferry floated on water for the first time this week.

The ship is headed to the Mat Su Borough this fall. The ship still needs to go through final outfitting, dock trials, builder and owner sea trials according to co-inventor Lew Madden in Ketchikan. The M-V Susitna is being built at the Alaska Ship and Drydock in Ketchikan.

Once launched, it is expected to cut four hours off the roundtrip commute from Anchorage to Point Mackenzie. It is expected that fares per person could range from 6 to 10 dollars to travel from the Port to Anchorage and another 25 per vehicle.

The ferry is the first ice breaking catamaran in the world.
