(Anchorage, AK) – The Alaska Division of Parks was established in October, 1970, the same year the legislature created Chilkat, Kachemak Bay, Chugach and Denali State Parks. In the past forty years, Alaska’s state park system has grown to encompass 3.2 million acres in 121 different units. These 121 state park units vary in size and character from the one-half acre Potter Section House State Historic Site to the 1.6 million acre Wood-Tikchik State Park.

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary special events will be held statewide this year. Two events planned for May are:

May 8, 2010
Friends of Kachemak Bay State Park will offer a pancake breakfast in Homer; proceeds from the event will be used for the group’s “Kids Ride to the Park Free” day later this summer. Kachemak Bay State Park is located across Kachemak Bay from Homer and is accessible by water or air only.

May 22, 2010
Join some of Chugach State Park’s founders for a hike up Indian Valley beginning from the trailhead at 9:00AM.
