Su Valley skiers head to Homer

The Su Valley boys ski team was in Homer this past weekend, racing at Lookout Mountain. The boy’s varsity team skied on new trails above Kachemak Bay, which are some of the most difficult in the state. The course difficulty was compounded by light rainfall, which glazed the twisting and steep downhills into icy, fast corners and made long uphill climbs slow and wet.

The team was led by Ian Mannix who skied to 6th place among the fastest 40 varsity skiers in Region 3. He was followed by Tyler Figley who came in 26th. Su Valley’s newest skiers placed 3 in a row again, led by Elias Curtis who out-distanced Suvan Sterling by 40 seconds. Skyler Hamler rounded out the trio. Gus Shoulders did not compete due to illness.

The ski team looks forward to its next competition this coming weekend. Both girls and boys will participate at the Lynx Loppet in Anchorage, the largest statewide high school event next to the State meet.
