Begich sworn in

Former Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich was sworn in this morning as U.S. senator in Washington DC. The 111th Congress convened today and the first order of business was to swear in new members. Begich is hosting two open receptions – one in a senate room surrounding the swearing in ceremony, and one this evening at the historic Willard Hotel near the White House.

Begich has been given his committee assignments – he’ll be serving on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the Armed Services Committee. Begich is Alaska’s first Democrat to serve in Congress in nearly 30 years. He resigned from his job as Anchorage mayor on Saturday.
