Council looks at Board of Game proposals

The Talkeetna Community Council discussed several proposed changes to the Board of Game on Monday night.

John Strasenburgh was one of the several persons to be heard during the evening meeting. He announced and questioned several proposals introduced. Proposals will be heard at the Board of Game hearings in Anchorage, February 27 thru March 9. The proposals that were questioned involved hunting in or near Denali State Park in unit 13E. The council decided to comment on the proposals under the issue of safety to residents and visitors. One voice from the audience commented that more council members and more audience members should be present for such a discussion.

Proposal 114 would expand the boundary of the predator control area into Denali State Park and the Indian River State Recreation Area. Other proposals recommend brown bear baiting and an extension of the black bear baiting season.

The council, after much discussion, decided to write letters to the Board of Game opposing the proposals. Concern over human safety was the main issue. They said brown bear baiting and aerial predator control so close to areas where large amounts of people live and recreate, would create a safety hazard.

Any resident or group can write in favor of, or against, any proposed Board of Game change. Any resident or organization can submit proposals to the Board of Game to be heard at their annual meetings. Comments are due by February 13th to the Board of Game.
