Mat Su Borough’s animal shelter will close for one day next week to move into the new addition.
The shelters expansion project is close to completion. Staff will use Monday to move into the new completed addition and then construction work will begin on the existing structure.
Animal care Chief, Robert Haskell says he thanks all borough residents for their patience through the construction mess.
The new addition is 14 thousand square feet. New amenities are designed to better care for animals. There is a training area, 3 adoption rooms, grooming area updated laundry room with new commercial washer and dryer. The new facility has 3 times the holding capacity for animals. The area also includes a new heated night drop off kennel and 2 counseling rooms.
The total cost of the expansion is 5 point 2 million dollars. Groundbreaking on the new shelter took place last June. When the construction is completed, the shelter will be able to house 200 animals. Last year, over 36 hundred animals were taken into the shelter.
The renovation of the old structure should be complete by July.
