KTNA is pleased to announce that it’s concert line-up for 2009 is complete!* Following in the tradition of the last several years, KTNA is bringing diverse live music performances for residents and visitors in the northern Susitna Valley. The concerts this summer begin in May with folk music from Iowa, concluding with a spectacular Afrobeat extravaganza in August. Along that spectrum is highly-charged Scottish traditional, and tribal funk from village Alaska.
The series opens on May 27th with legendary singer-songwriter Greg Brown, who has had two Grammy nominations over his long and fruitful career. The founder of Red House Records, Brown’s music arises from the heartland of Iowa, and it has been tremendously influential in American folk music.
The traditional vein flows into June, with the dynamic Scottish acoustic band, Old Blind Dogs. Yet the traditional is not quite, for Old Blind Dogs integrates African percussion into the Celtic mix. The band performs on June 26th, but will also be leading musician workshops on the 25th.
Tradition collides with urban funk when Alaska’s Pamyua takes the stage. Pamyua’s unique musical vision draws on Inuit roots and African-American influences, and it always moves the audience. KTNA is excited to be able to host Pamyua’s debut in Talkeetna on July 17th.
The summer concert finale is an August 7th Afrobeat explosion with Albino!, a 10-piece ensemble that honors the fiery legacy of Nigerian musical icon Fela Kuti. Hypnotic percussion, heavy horns, African dance, and wild costumes and choreography recently won the band top honors at the SF Music Awards for “Best World Music.”
