The Mat Su Borough is completing a comprehensive update of its zoning ordinance, known as Title 17. That code manages development and growth within the Borough boundaries. The current Title 17 has been amended hundreds of times.
Borough planners say the amendments have made the code difficult to cross-reference and sometimes it is difficult to prevent unintended consequences. The hope is to streamline and eliminate loopholes as well as consolidate regulations.
The Borough Planning and Land Use Department began rewriting the zoning code in the fall of 2008 and it includes 2 phases. Phase one includes a newly formatted and reorganized code. A draft will go through public comment and be presented to the Assembly for their consideration.
Phase 2 is a revising of the special use district process, parking, lighting, agricultural and signage standards. Those will be discussed in open forum.
The two public meetings will be held in Wasilla and in the Upper Valley. The first meeting is in Wasilla on May 14th and the second meeting is Thursday, May 21st at the Su Valley High School/Senior Center at 6:30 p.m. The public meetings will look at Phase one exclusively.
