Mat Su Borough continues quest for National Heritage designation

The Mat Su Borough is continuing to pursue a National Heritage Area designation.

Fran Seager-Boss gave a presentation at the last Talkeetna Community Council meeting on the purpose of the project and its history.

The study is in its 3rd year.  She says the designation would be a way to ensure that the Mat Su and Su Valley’s heritage is not lost in the future.  The program allows areas to pursue conservation, education and economic development programs.  She said that NHA’s typically receive 10 million dollars in federal funding over a period of 10 years to complete programs and conservation efforts.

She mentioned a myriad of possibilities the money can be used for once the designation is obtained:  trails, tourism marketing programs, historic building restoration and preserving historic sites for future generations.

The Talkeetna Council Board will write a letter approving the idea of the Mat Su Borough pursuing the study of a National Heritage Area designation and supporting Fran Seegar Boss’s efforts.
