Assembly overrides tax veto

Mat Su Borough mayor Talis Colberg’s veto on a sales tax ordinance was overridden last night (tues) by the Mat Su Borough Assembly.

The Borough Assembly has debated the sales tax at several meetings. Last week, after the Assembly approved the issue to go to the voters in October, Mayor Colberg vetoed the decision.

The Assembly voted 6 to 1 to override the mayor’s veto.

The sales tax is linked to property tax reductions by proposing to lower the area-wide mill rates.  A fund would also be created to direct all excess sales tax collections to mill rate reduction in the subsequent year.  And the tax has a sunset clause, so voters would go back to the polls in 2012 for another vote.

Mat Su Borough voters will go to the polls on October 6th to vote on the sales tax ballot measure as well as choose a mayor, Assembly representatives and School Board members.
