Talkeetna is bracing for a busy weekend as the Su Valley Jr. and Sr. High School plays host not only to the Crowley Basketball tournament but also the Mat-Su Borough Ski Championships. The classic style ski meet will take place on Saturday, February 13 and starts at 11 a.m. with the Girls Varsity race and continues through early afternoon.
Ski coach Ed O’Connor said that the race is going to be a classic style race with set tracks and no skating. All divisions will start with a mass start. Both junior varsity and varsity boys are skiing 8K, the girls are skiing a 6K course. O’Connor expects 90 skiers to compete as students from five borough schools and a team from Valdez are scheduled to participate. He said that after the competition wraps up, there will be a community ski event starting at 2 p.m., followed by a senior send-off and the awards ceremony at 3 pm.
