ADF&G to place seasonal fish camp at Susitna River

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has applied for a permit to place a seasonal research camp and 4 fish wheels in 2 separate locations on the Susitna River to count and identify coho and chum salmon.

The permit, if issued, would be valid from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2015. However, the project is only planned through 2012.  The fish wheels would be operational only from July 1st through September 15th of each year.

Deshka Landing in Willow will be used as the launch to reach the camps, one of which is near the confluence of the Yentna River and the other is proposed at the confluence of the Deshka and Susitna. The camp will be staffed 24 hours a day with ADF &G employees.  The permit says the camp should not take up more than an acre.  All materials except for the tent platforms, outhouse, shower and four fish wheels will be completely removed each fall.  At the end of the three-year period, everything will be removed from the site.

DNR is inviting people to comment on the proposed permit.  Residents can comment and review the three possible sites and the operation.  Written comments must be received by April 28th.
