Mat Su Borough’s zoning code update gets pushed back

Mat Su Borough planners say that so many comments have been received on the revisions to the zoning code –title 17—that they need to re-work the document.

The Mat Su Borough started work on revising the zoning ordinance last year.  Residents attended public meetings and commented on a public review draft document.  Borough officials originally said that they expected the revisions to go through the process and be adopted by summer of 2010.

However, Emerson Krueger, one of the planners on the team, said there have been so many substantive comments that a new public review draft is being produced.  He says the goal is to make the process work better, and easier, for anyone who needs to work within the code. In the end, they want to ensure that the revisions do just that.  He says he is wading through more than 500 comments.

Another public comment period will take place in June or July, according to Krueger.  In his words, he says he knows it’s a rotten time and he realizes people will be busy, but it can’t be put off.  By soldiering on, he hopes the newest revisions can go in front of the planning commission by fall.
