Trails Advisory Committee asks for signage

Close calls this winter between snowmachiners and skiers prompted the Talkeetna trails advisory committee to ask the Talkeetna Community Council to seek Borough signage along the Old Lake Road trailheads.

Another problem arose this winter, according to Chris Mannix.  People, perhaps visitors only,  have started to use the small lot near the end of Beaver Road for overnight camping.  The area is only big enough for 3 cars during the winter, and during high snow years, perhaps less.  The area, according to Mannix, is meant to be a temporary day use area for persons wanting to access the trails either by snowmachine, skis or dogteam.

The trails advisory committee asked the council if they could write a letter to the Mat Su Borough requesting a ‘no overnight parking’ sign for the parking area.  Speed limit signs and signs warning of a multi-use trail with blind curves were requested for trailheads to the Old Lake Road trailhead at the end of the Christianson Lake Road and at Beaver Road. Mannix reported incidents this winter where *a snowmachiner encountered 2 snowmachines* traveling at high rates of speed around blind corners.

The Talkeetna Community Council’s board of directors voted unanimously to write a letter to the Mat Su Borough asking for assistance with signage.
