Burn permits suspended

The state division of forestry has suspended all burn permits and the use of burn barrels within the Mat-Su Valley. The hot and dry weather forecasted throughout the Memorial Day weekend prompted the suspension. Also, many firefighters from the Mat-Su are dispatched to help fight wildfires near Tok and north of the Alaska Range.

Matt Weaver with the forestry division said that with no rain in the forecast it is important that people are extra careful this weekend to not cause a wildfire.

Campfires or cooking fires are still allowed but not encouraged and may not exceed 3 feet in diameter. You must follow safe burning guidelines and be in attendance with water and shovel for extinguishment, your fire is not out until you can safely check it with your hand.
