Today marks the day of the transfer of the Territory of Alaska from Russia to the US. The transfer took place at a flag raising ceremony in Sitka on Ocotber 18, 1867.
It should not be confused with Sewards Day, which marks the signing of the treaty for the Alaska Purchase, when US purchased Alaska from Russia on March 30, 1867.
