The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – NOAA — has reported extreme solar activity that occurred Tuesday morning. The solar flare was rated a class X6.9 on the three-class scale. The strongest type of eruption is an X while the weakest is a C.
NOAA’s website lists the flare as the largest one so far in the current cycle that started in 2008. The peak of the cycle is supposed to be in 2013.
Some radio communication blackouts could occur with this latest storm but no particles are expected to threaten Earth.
Strong auroras could occur as a result of the solar flare. It usually takes a couple of days for the activity on the sun to be apparent on Earth. Northern lights activity may be strong Thursday evening according to NOAA. Read more here.
