Disney’s Beauty and the Beast just finished playing at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, so we thought it was a great time to share the original story upon which the play is very loosely based. Storynory’s version is derived from a source closer to the original fairytale, set down in writing for the first time by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in France in 1740. The best-known version was published by another French writer, Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, a few years later.
