A new addition to Talkeetna Village Park arrived just in time for the last gasps of the tourist season. A two-seater vault toilet has been installed on the west side of the park, adjacent to the current wooden outhouses, which are scheduled to be removed in the coming week. The two-seater toilet had been included in the original park renovation plans that also included park upgrades at Christiansen Lakes Park and Talkeetna Lakes Park.
While numerous people in town have voiced the opinion that two stalls are inadequate to handle the heavy flow of summer-time visitors, the Borough says it still has an 8-unit trailer that will be made available for future seasons while a permanent facility with plumbing and multiple stalls can be arranged.
The Downtown Park is still slated to receive a new and improved pavilion that will be installed north of the current pavilion’s location. The Department of Parks and Recreation has received written approval from the Alaska Rail Road to place the structure on the northern end of the park, which is owned by the Rail Road. It is possible that the new performance pavilion could be in before winter, but it is being held up in the design stage.
