While it was not a repeat of last year’s triumph, the Su-Valley Rams both finished in the top three in the 2015 Crowley Classic Basketball Tournament over the weekend. The
boys team lost their first game on Thursday to Sand Point, but won their second against Tanana. The girls won both of their pool games, and were placed in the championship game on Saturday.
The Su-Valley girls faced off in the final match against the Nenana Lady Lynx. The Rams trailed by two at the end of the first half. In the third quarter, Nenana began to open a bigger lead, which Su-Valley was never able to erase. The Lady Lynx won the final game 29-23, and claimed first place in this year’s Crowley Classic. Su-Valley captain Sarena Drover had a major impact in the game with eight total rebounds and seven steals. Ellie Bietsch led the Rams in scoring with eight points. The Su-Valley girls ended the tournament in second place.
Later on Saturday, the Su-Valley boys tipped off against the Ninilchik Wolverines in what would prove to a close, high-scoring game. At the half, the Su-Valley Rams trailed 31-27. They then outscored Ninilchik by nine in the third, and a fourth-quarter rally by the Wolverines fell just short. The Rams shot forty-five percent from the field on the way to a 57-55 victory, and third-place honors. Su-Valley captain Dawson Matthews dominated the stat sheet, leading the team in points, rebounds, and steals. Tyran Waterhouse also came up big for Su-Valley, scoring fourteen points and bringing down seven rebounds.
