Matanuska Electric Association has issued an advisory to its members regarding a phone fraud scheme.

According to MEA, multiple members have received calls from someone claiming to work for the utility. The person demands immediate payment and threatens to shut off the member’s power.

MEA’s website says the utility will never ask a member to pay a bill in person, will not take credit card payments directly over the phone, and will not direct members to any location other than an MEA office to make a payment.

MEA asks that any member who receives a fraudulent call from someone posing as an MEA employee call 761-9300.
