The Mat-Su Borough Assembly will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday at 2:00 pm. The purpose of the meeting is to reappropriate funds to cover the response to Friday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake, and to extend the emergency declaration for the earthquake.
Damage assessments took place over the weekend, and continue this week. Most borough schools are closed through at least Tuesday, with the exception of schools in the Northern Susitna Valley.
Most roads in the borough remain passable. Exceptions are the area of Vine Road that collapsed as a result of the earthquake. The borough says in a statement released Sunday that the collapsed section of Vine Road is dangerous, and pedestrians should avoid it.
Point Mackenzie Road also sustained significant damage, but remained partially passable after the earthquake. Sunday night’s snowfall complicates that, however, as a portion of the road is not plowable at this time.
Port Mackenzie is still operable, and a team of divers from Homer is scheduled to check for damage below the water line.
Mat-Su Borough Public Works Director Terry Dolan says it is not necessary to boil water from Talkeetna’s water system, since the water mains remained intact.
