Su Valley Boys and Girls take second at Crowley Classic

Ruby Matthews tips off for Su-Valley in the 2017 Crowley Classic.

The Su Valley Rams boys and girls teams both placed second in the Crowley Classic Basketball Tournament over the weekend.

Both teams took the same path to Saturday’s championship game. On Thursday, both the boys and girls defeated Nikolaevsk by double-digit margins. The boys managed to put up seventy-one points against the Warriors.

On Friday, the Rams put up two dominant performances against the Sand Point Eagles. This was the Lady Rams’ highest scoring game of the tournament at fifty-seven points.

The wins earned both teams an appearance in the championship games against King Cove.

The King Cove girls, whose mascot is the Rookies, came into the game undefeated, and wasted no time demonstrating why. Led by tournament MVP Elaina Mack, who is averaging more than thirty-five points per game, the Rookies put up eighty-two points on their way to the Crowley Classic championship. Although the score was fairly lopsided, with the Rams scoring twenty-eight, the Su Valley fans and players never showed a sign of giving up.

The boys championship game stayed close into the second half. After coming out of half time down by four, Su Valley rallied to take the lead over the King Cove T-Jacks. The lead would pass back and forth multiple times before the T-Jacks began to take control in the fourth, extending a small lead to double digits and ultimately winning by thirteen points.

Multiple Su Valley players ended the tournament with individual honors. All-tournament team members included Mackenzie Moore, Kenna Grenier, Eileen Johnston, and Dylan Bietsch for the Lady Rams. For the boys, Blake Drover, Daniel Kehoe, and Will Snyder made the all-tournament team. India Roderick and Dalton Pinard both earned the Bruce Gunderson Heart and Hustle Award.

In the skills completion, CJ Goodman won the boys free throw competition, and Su Valley’s Mike Matthews won the coaches three-pointer competition.

The Rams are at home again this weekend, taking on Tok this Friday and Saturday.
