Tuesday is Election Day

Next Tuesday November 5th is Election Day for the Mat-Su Borough and the Talkeetna Community Council area.

This is the first year that both of these elections have been held in November. In the past, borough elections were held in October, but voters chose to change the election date to coincide with state and national elections last year. Talkeetna Community Council Inc. elections are tied to the borough election day in the council’s bylaws.

The Northern Susitna Valley has only one item on the borough ballot – a school board seat. In recent years, school district seats have gone from being at-large positions voted on by the entire borough to having the same district boundaries as borough assembly seats. Only one candidate, Jeff V. Taylor of Wasilla, will be on Tuesday’s ballot.

The board of the Talkeetna Community Council has three open seats, each for a two-year term beginning at the December council meeting. The ballot has two approved candidates – Kristy Kingery and Cortni Ruth. Voters can also write in a candidate’s name but the council’s bylaws required that all write-in candidates submit a Declaration of Candidacy form by October 29th. There is only one approved write in candidate – Lora Nelson.

Any person of legal voting age whose primary residence is within the Talkeetna Community Council boundaries may vote in this election. A map showing these boundaries is available at the library.

In person voting is at the Talkeetna Public Library from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm on Tuesday. Early voting for both ballots is available during regular library hours through Monday.
