The 2019 Talkeetna Bachelor Auction raised nearly $25,000 for local causes, and the organization has decided how to distribute those funds.
About half of the money raised is going to the Talkeetna Bachelor Society Fund for Women and Children in crisis. The fund is administered by the Jessica Stevens Community Foundation and the Alaska Community Foundation.
The remainder of the auction proceeds are given out each year as grants. The largest sum of grants is going to various programs at Susitna Valley Junior-Senior High School. In total, the school, specific programs, and the parent, teacher, student association are receiving more than $4000. The largest individual grant is $2,000 to help pay for student transportation for after-school activities. Other grants to Su Valley include supplementary meals for athletes and funds for a student-run spirit shop put on my the marketing class.
Talkeetna Elementary School is receiving a total of $2,300 for the school’s salad bar, healthy snack program, a sewing club, and the biennial Kachemak Bay field trip.
Other spending from the auction’s earnings include $1,000 that is set aside for a scholarship granted to a graduating Su Valley student and money for the VFW Auxiliary for post 3836 to buy hats and gloves to distribute on Halloween.
