Each week, U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan recognizes one or more Alaskans on the Senate floor as the “Alaskans of the Week.” Last week, he chose two Northern Susitna Valley locals.
“Our Alaskans of the week, today, are Doug and April Moore. They are the owners of an iconic store in Talkeetna, Moore’s Hardware and Building Supply. It is a hardware store with a heart and aplace for the community to gather, particularly in the winter. And it’s a place that the Moores run to reflect the value of families and community that they hold so dear.”
Senator Sullivan described both Doug and April Moore’s upbringing in the area and how they met. Most of his focus was on the work that the Moores do for the community, beginning with their staff.
“Here’s how one employee describes working for them, ‘You will never find anyone like them anywhere.’ Another said, ‘They are amazing people—an amazing couple. What they do for us, personally, they take care of us—make sure we are taken care of. If we have family issues, they understand and do everything they can to help.’”
Outside of their own staff, the Moores have been known to help local non-profits and causes, including the Upper Susitna Food Pantry. Senator Sullivan specifically pointed out their efforts to aid those recovering from the McKinley Fire last August.
“As one of the largest hardware stores servicing that region…Moore’s Hardware and Building Supply stepped up, donating time, equipment, and giving to people who needed help—people who needed to rebuild. We often talk about how small businesses are the backbone of our economy, but…they are also the backbone of our communities.”
Senator Sullivan ended his remarks by thanking the Moores for their work as business owners and community members.
