Mat-Su Borough School District steps up pandemic response

174 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Mat-Su School District during the past two weeks.  This has prompted District Leadership to announce additional guidelines for both schools and students.

According to Jillian Morrissey, Public Information Officer for the Mat-Su School District, all school athletics are temporarily suspended through December 6th.  In addition, staff and students in grades 3 through 12 will wear masks at all times in Mat-Su school buildings.  The mask wearing requirements will now extend to before and after school clubs, athletics and physical education classes.  Mask breaks will continue to be allowed.

Houston Jr/Sr High School reported 15 new cases during the past two weeks, and Willow Elementary reported 2.  No new cases were reported at Susitna-Valley Jr/Sr High School or Talkeetna Elementary School.  On November 13th, 82 cases were reported throughout the Mat-Su Valley for that day alone.

The School District sent an email last Friday to parents imploring them to socially distance, wear masks and avoid large gatherings, saying that they are scrambling to keep schools open for students.
