The race for Mat-Su Borough Mayor is back to three candidates, as former Wasilla Mayor Bert Cottle announced he is resuming his campaign.
Cottle announced on Facebook in late September that he was withdrawing from the race, citing unspecified health concerns. Last week, his campaign posted again, elaborating on the situation. Cottle has been undergoing chemotherapy, which is the reason he initially withdrew from the race. According to the post from Thursday, he has responded well, and is again actively campaigning.
Due to the rules around candidate lists for borough elections, Cottle never technically withdrew, and his name was going to appear on the November 2nd ballot regardless of whether he was still campaigning.
Current Mat-Su Borough Mayor Vern Halter is ineligible to run again due to term limits. The three candidates are Cottle, Palmer Mayor Edna DeVries, and former Mat-Su Borough Assembly Member Matthew Beck.
