Borough to Evaluate Sites for Resource Potential

The Mat-Su Borough Assembly at its February 7th meeting approved a contract with Recon, LLC, to evaluate six Borough-owned properties for sand and gravel potential.

One of the sites is located on the Parks Highway at about Mile 128 near the Chulitna River Bridge. Another is located between Mile 18 and 19 on Oilwell Road in Trapper Creek. Borough Natural Resource Manager Emerson Krueger says the sites are primarily evaluated in advance of large infrastructure projects to determine if materials might be extracted close to the project site.

Though the contracted firm will only focus on providing geotechnical services, Krueger indicates that the Borough Planning staff carefully evaluate proposed sites. During the conditional use permitting phase, Planning staff will review the site’s proximity to residential areas, neighboring land uses, and potential for public uses after reclamation.

The contractor is expected to complete the evaluations and submit a final report by June 30, 2023.
