Rock to repair the revetment near the end of Main Street in Talkeetna began arriving over the weekend.
According to a statement from the Mat-Su Borough on Friday, 900 tons of riprap are being delivered. As of Monday, a significant amount had been staged near the damaged area of the revetment.
The damage was first noticed last Tuesday after high water on the Susitna and Talkeetna Rivers began to recede. By Wednesday, the area where the revetment was been had eroded away, and the river was threatening nearby cabins.
Borough Public Works Director Tom Adams visited Talkeetna on Thursday with a representative of the U.S. Army Corps (CORE) of Engineers. They determined that over 300 feet of the revetment had been washed away between Main and First Streets.
According to the borough’s statement, repairs to the revetment would ideally be made once the river level drops. If drier weather continues, the borough says those repairs could happen within the next couple of months.
Borough and Army Corps of Engineers staff were back in Talkeetna on Monday to continue to review the damage.
