State and Borough Issue Public Safety Messages for Holiday Season

As Winter Solstice, Christmas, and the new year approach, multiple government organizations have issued advisories for staying safe during the holidays.

The Alaska Department of Public Safety has announced that enhanced DUI patrols are underway statewide through New Year’s Day. Troopers say there will be additional vehicles patrolling highways and roads for motorists driving under the influence. Dangerous drivers can be reported any time by calling 9-1-1.

On Wednesday, the Mat-Su Borough Department of Emergency Services urged Valley residents to take extra care with fire safety. In recent months, multiple borough residents have died as the result of structure fires. The borough is urging residents to install and maintain smoke alarms, develop a home fire escape plan, and, in the event of a fire, to stay low and keep doors closed.

Additionally, the borough is offering a program to assist those who need help installing smoke alarms in their home.
